# Lockboxes

A **Lockbox** is a physical mailing address that receives paper mail on your behalf. Checks and other mailed gifts sent to a Lockbox are scanned and turned into [Mail Items](../mail_items/overview), which in turn produce [Donations](../donations/overview) and [Deposits](../deposits/overview).

Use Lockboxes to:

* Look up the mailing address a [Source](../sources/overview) should send checks to.
* Identify which Lockbox a Mail Item, Donation, or Deposit came in through.
